Blondie and Blomkvist

In the middle of The Girl Who Played with Fire, Blomkvist turns on the pop singer Debbie Harry, singing her 1999 hit Maria. Beside the fact that this was a popular song while Larsson was writing this passage (in about 2003), there does remain another possible significance to this song selection. Debbie Harry was the oldest female singer to have a #1 hit on the UK charts, and this song marks the beginning of her re-creation of her group, Blondie, more than 25 years after it broke up. Larsson, similarly, was just beginning his writing career after more than 25 years as a journalist. Also, the lyrics of Harry’s song seem to suggest Lisbeth: “She moves like she doesn’t care… You’ve gotta see her… She’s like a millionaire…”
